Serenity Prayer in English

About

The Serenity Prayer originated in the early 20th century and has become a timeless expression of faith and resilience. Its simple yet profound plea encapsulates the human struggle with control, acceptance, and discernment. Widely embraced by both religious communities and secular programs like Alcoholics Anonymous, the prayer serves as a guiding mantra for finding peace amidst life’s challenges. Its enduring importance lies in its universal appeal, offering comfort and clarity to those facing uncertainty or adversity, encouraging a balanced approach to life’s trials.

Serenity Prayer

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
courage to change the things I can,
and wisdom to know the difference.

Longer Version

God grant me the Serenity
To accept the things I cannot change,
Courage to change the things I can,
And the Wisdom to know the difference.

Living one day at a time,
Enjoying one moment at a time.
Accepting hardship as a pathway to peace,
Taking, as he did, this sinful world as it is,
Not as I would like it.

Trusting that he will make all things right,
If I surrender to his will.
That I may be reasonably happy in this world
And supremely happy in the next.
